The times are changing and technology is moving at lightening pace. It has revolutionised the way we work and things will never be the same again.
Computers science has come a long way from its humble beginnings just a few decades ago. The changes have been phenomenal. Not only big in size and scope, but the pace at which they have taken place is truly astounding.
The Industrial Work Week
When the industrial revolution took place, along came the concept of a 9 to 5 work day. Only weekends were given off to the workers. This led to a routine which could be managed by the executives of the industry. And thus a person was bound to the work schedule. One had to get up at the same time every day and report for work and never be late. Even if one fell sick, it was really difficult to get a day off. The mornings and evenings were spent slaving away and nights were spent trying to rest and recover from the hectic work routine.
Along came Information Technology
And then along came the advent of information technology. With it the internet. And it changed everything. People became independent. They were no longer tied to their workplace or their bosses. They could work at any time and from anywhere. It gave them the freedom to collaborate with people around the globe. And thus, this world truly became a global village. It not only improved productivity of the work force. They had found freedom. And the tools that enabled them to do this was the advent of information technology coupled with the easy availability of the internet.
Freelancing is The Future
If one was to look at how the way we work has changed; one need only look at the freelancing industry. Sites of this sort have cropped up in the hundreds. And few of them have truly gone global. Many people around the world now only rely on them as a means of sustenance. Granted that few individuals view it as a part time job but many have taken it up as a full time vocation. And it has only been possible through Information Technology and the internet. Now a person sitting in South Asia can easily find an employer in the States and that too from the comfort of his living room. He does not have to worry about leaving his home or going through the hassle of moving to a new part of the world. All the logistical and administrative challenges coupled with it have been multiplied by zero.
Broadening of the Horizons
It isn’t that we are saying that all the work will be now be done from home. But we can safely say that this has become the new norm. And we will only see an increase in this trend. The genie is out of the bottle and its’ almost next to impossible to put it back in. Not only have the workers benefited from this but so did the employers. It’s a win-win situation for all. What is left to be seen is the way information technology advancements make it more easy and accessible to work from home in the coming future.
